I am a British mum of two who has recently returned to living in Skåne (southern Sweden), with my partner of 15 years.

I lived in Sweden for 5 years and after a spell of nearly 6 years back in the UK, we have decided to move back to Sweden for the benefit of our children and their lives.

I find it cathartic to write about my every day life, however, everything I say is with my tongue firmly in my cheek. I am trying to be amusing and not offensive – I am (or try to be) respectful of the country I live in and its inhabitants 🙂

I think it is so useful to speak to people who are in a similar boat, and have set up a new forum for all expats living in Sweden – it’s brand new, and I could really help with your support, if you get a minute!

  1. Good Luck with the blog and thanks for visiting.
We moved here (from Guildford) many many years ago and the kids have grown up and have long since left home. First everybody spoke English when I was around, then I spoke English while others spoke Swedish and then one day I realised that my Swedish was better than most others’ English. That was a real ego boost. Now I just speak fast to cover up my mistakes.

  2. Hej hej. Thanks for following my blog. It looks like we have some things in common…I read a couple of your first posts, and I feel your pain, although I do not get the same impression of working vs children from the people I have met in Stockholm, nor about the show off aspects of money…but like most things here, I only get part of the story because I do not understand most of what is being said, and thus miss many important details.

It does sound, however, that your son is feeling good about the move, and that is probably the most important thing right now. I have met quite a few ex-pats, Brits and North Americans, who all agree that the child care support is key to staying here, even when you get very homesick.

Keep in touch. And lycka till!

  3. Dear sunsinsweden,

My name is Joyce and I work for ExpatFinder.com.
ExpatFinder.com is a free one stop website for people preparing to move or working and living overseas. We provide a myriad of services for expatriates and we have over 2,000 articles to help and support the people moving around the world and we are now creating an interview section to help the expats with real life experiences!
We quite enjoy your blog about living in Skåne, it is very interesting and informative. Would it be possible to interview you to further share some of your tips and feature some of your first hand experience as an Expat and your interview will be published on our Expat Interview section as a guide for our expat readers. The questions are mainly about the day to day lifestyle of an expat. If it would be possible, could you also send some photographs that we can use?
Of course, if you accept, we can add a link to your blog or some of your website.
The questions are enclosed, feel free to respond freely. You can return the doc with your answers if you accept this invitation.
Thanks in advance and do let me know if you prefer other means to conduct this interview and we would be happy to accommodate your terms.

    Best regards,
